SuperFoods for SuperDogs

Did you know Superfoods are also wonderful for pets?

They are nutrient-dense, easy to digest and promote well-being.  A natural fit for carnivorous dogs is bone broth, the slow simmering of the bones makes the nutrients readily available for your pet.  Inflammation is the key driver of most disease and turmeric is one of the best natural anti-inflammatories either nature or medicine has to offer.

Bone Broth contains many nutrients including amino acids, collagen, gelatin, trace minerals and glucosamine sulfate. Bone broth can be used to fill in gaps in your pet’s diet and help them deal with common health challenges, like joint aches, dehydration, diarrhea, upset stomach and allergies.

  1. Bone broth can be poured over dog food to encourage a sluggish appetite, improve hydration, especially in the warmer summer months, and provide a source of minerals. Bone broths contain minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others) in forms that your pet’s body can easily absorb.
  2. Bone broth is a great source of glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid that help support joints’ elasticity, strength and flexibility. It’s also the best food source of collagen. Collagen can help repair connective tissue that surrounds and cushions the ends of your pet’s bones, facilitating smoother movement and leading to less irritation and pain.
  3. Bone broth can help promote healthy gut integrity while reducing inflammation and intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome). Restoring strength to the gut lining is helpful for fighting food sensitivities (eg. wheat or dairy), regulating gastric acid secretions and helping with the growth of good bacteria.
  4. Bone broth can reduce respiratory inflammations from allergies or toxins. Studies have found that amino acids that are released when bone broth is made help reduce inflammation in the respiratory system and improve the immune system’s ability to fight conditions like allergies, asthma and arthritis.

If your dog is exposed to viruses or bacteria, acute inflammation will release white blood cells to the body tissues and start the healing process, this is how the body is supposed to work. But chronic inflammation that lasts for weeks, months and even years results in degenerative and inflammatory health issues in your dog. Turmeric is a safe and effective way to treat your dogs.

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, wound healing and anticancer activities. It can help fight diseases like arthritis, diabetes, cancer, liver disease and gastrointestinal issues.

  1. Chronic inflammation can lead to cancer and turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Half of adult dogs today will get cancer, turmeric could be a great way to protect your dog.
  2. Arthritis is the result of inflammation and turmeric can decrease inflammation in the body. But it can also relieve the pain and stiffness in arthritis even better than conventional pain medications.
  3. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory effects can be helpful in treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) as well as other gastrointestinal disorders.  It’s been shown in several preclinical studies and uncontrolled clinical trials as having positive effects on gut inflammation and gut permeability.
  4. Many dogs are on steroids for allergies or joint pain. Curcumin can be just as effective as the drugs without the side effects.
