Plant-Based Protein 101
Why so much focus on protein? Everywhere you look at health and fitness, you will find that protein is often emphasized as having high importance when looking to maintain optimal health. Is all the focus on protein worth it?
Protein is a macronutrient, meaning it is a component of food that is needed for energy and to maintain systems and structures within the body. Protein is found throughout the body in muscle, skin, hair and practically every tissue or body part.1 Protein is made up of amino acids, and there are 9 amino acids known as essential because your body cannot synthesize them, meaning you must consume them from food sources.1 All protein sources that come from animals, like chicken, eggs, or salmon, contain all the 9 essential amino acids.
Getting enough protein daily is essential to maintain bone health as it makes up approximately 50% of bone volume and helps increase lean muscle mass when combined with exercise to promote a healthy body weight.
There are also several plant protein sources including tofu, beans, and nuts. However, many plant-based proteins do not contain all the essential amino acids. So, when consuming vegan protein sources, you need to be aware of what amino acids are in each source, which can be a lot to keep track of! This is why plant-based protein powders can be an easy and effective way of getting in enough protein, while also making sure you’re getting all 9 essential amino acids!
Genuine Health Fermented Organic Vegan Proteins+ considers all important aspects of a vegan protein, and it’s incredibly delicious and creamy! With 20 g of plant-based protein and a combination of 7 different vegan protein sources, this protein powder contains all 9 essential amino acids in just one scoop. Our FOVP includes organic fermented yellow pea seed protein, organic fermented brown rice seed protein, and an organic fermented vegan protein blend which includes organic hemp, organic pumpkin, organic flaxseed, organic mung bean, and organic spirulina. This unique blend allows diversity and variety to ensure you get what you need!
We’ve also made sure to ferment our proteins, this is important to ensure they are easily digested and absorbed! A lot of vegan proteins can cause bloating and upset your stomach, this is because the molecules are large and are difficult to break down in the intestines. By fermenting these ingredients, they are broken down into smaller pieces before you ingest them, allowing them to be absorbed and digested easier, meaning they become gentle on the stomach, aka no bloat.
FOVP comes in three great tasting, smooth and creamy flavours – vanilla, chocolate, and unflavoured! It’s fantastic on its own, mixed into water or a milk of choice, but also can be used in a wide variety of recipes. Check out one of our favourites below!
