Managing all stages of menopause

Not feeling like yourself lately?

Are you feeling:

  • Fatigue?
  • Mood swings?
  • Poor memory/concentration?
  • Low sex drive?
  • Vaginal/skin dryness?
  • Hair loss?
  • Brittle nails?
  • Weight gain
  • Joint pain?
  • Stress/Anxiety?
  • Hot flashes?
  • Night sweats?

It could be perimenopause, the transition period before menopause which lasts on average for 4 to 8 years.

Menopause marks the end of a women’s reproductive years; a woman is officially in menopause when she has not had a period for one year. The average age in North America is 51.

If you are a woman over 40 (or even a bit younger) and are experiencing some of the symptoms outlined above, you might be in perimenopause.

During this time frame, the ovaries start to relinquish their hormone production to the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands also produce cortisol, a stress hormone. Your adrenals will prioritize the stress response as a means of survival. If you are the type of person who lets your emotions take hold, your adrenal glands might not be able to keep up.

Understanding how to let go of emotions that would otherwise stay stuck or become part of an obsessive thought pattern may make this transition period easier and may set a woman up for healthier post-menopausal years which some liken to a second spring.

Feel like yourself again
Here are some ideas:

  • Learn to breathe and take a step back to gain perspective
  • Move your body, walk, dance, garden, swim, cook, do yoga…
  • Take time to do things you enjoy or discover new ones
  • Eat real food, the kind without a package – take time to savour it
