Back to School Shouldn’t Mean Back to Stress

Ask the Expert: Back-to-School Stress with Dr. Marita Schauch

Q: I find it a very stressful when the kids go back to school. Is there anything that can help my stress level so I can manage everyone’s schedules better?

-Stressed Out, ON

A: Between work and home and everything in-between, life provides an unrelenting barrage of stress. Add in the beginning of the new school year and stress can become overwhelming. The ability to withstand stress depends on the optimal function of the adrenal glands. When stress becomes constant, adrenal fatigue sets in resulting in symptoms including:

  • Low energy
  • Loss of sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Low libido
  • Feeling “Blah”
  • Low stamina
  • Poor immunity
  • Pain and inflammation

In fact, 75-90 percent of all doctor visits can be related back to stress. The main stressors for people include money, work or school, relationships, family responsibilities, and health. Teen stress can rival that of adults. Back-to-school time can exacerbate these feelings of stress leading to any of the symptoms mentioned above.

So, what can we do? Obviously, some stress is unavoidable. The good news is that there are steps you can take to optimize your adrenal function to prevent the deteriorating effects of adrenal fatigue. Some examples include; exercise, relaxation techniques, restoring sleep, and reducing refined sugars, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods.  Along with positive lifestyle choices, you can also take appropriate supplements to support your adrenal function.

AdrenaSense is a natural formula containing rhodiola, suma, Siberian ginseng, schisandra, and ashwagandha. Taking supplements that support the adrenal glands help improve mental and physical performance after periods of exhaustion or stress and are a great way to lower cortisol or stress levels.
