If you’re going to wake up at night, make sure it’s for the right reason.
As we age, our bodies go through changes that can result in the development of several age-related medical conditions. For men entering their 50s, this can mean having to deal with the constant need to go to the bathroom. The problem, though not life-threatening, is caused by an enlarged prostate – a small gland that is part of a man’s urinary system and located just below the bladder, surrounding the tube that allows urine to flow out of the bladder.
“This problem can develop gradually as men age. Their prostate gland will expand and constrict the urine outlet tube,” says Josée Fortin, biochemist. “It becomes more difficult to empty the bladder at one time, resulting in the need for frequent urination and dribbling after urination.”
Nearly half of men over the age of 50 develop the problem, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (or BPH) to some degree. By the time a man is 80, he has an 80% risk of experiencing symptoms. There are other potential problems involving the prostate gland such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and cancer.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia “Prostatic hyperplasia” refers to enlargement of the prostate. “Benign” means non-malignant or non-cancerous. But just because it’s not malignant, doesn’t mean it’s easy to deal with.
What are the symptoms of BPH?
Although BPH can lurk unnoticed and produce no symptoms at all, men who have it usually show one or more of the following symptoms:
• Trouble getting urine flowing
• Weak and intermittent urine stream
• Frequent and sudden urges to urinate
• Frequent need to urinate at night
• Dribbling after urinating
• Incomplete voiding of the bladder after urinating
It is important for men to watch their diet by cutting down on saturated fats – found in red meats, dairy products and most processed foods – and limit tea, coffee and alcohol intake. Extra minerals and fatty acids from pumpkin seeds can also help (try them alone or on breakfast cereal), along with a general multivitamin and mineral supplement. If possible, avoid prolonged immobility and cold temperatures.
The good news is that there is a natural answer to BPH, which can be found in a small berry grown in Florida. Saw Palmetto has been used for hundreds of years by the native population to alleviate men’s problems. The oil in the berry contains free fatty acids which have been shown to inhibit adverse hormonal action in the prostate and reduce inflammation.
The Saw Palmetto oil is available in the herbal remedy Prostate 1 Sabalasan from A. Vogel, which is indicated for the relief of lower urinary tract symptoms in men with a confirmed diagnosis of BPH. It has been shown to reduce the symptoms of prostate enlargement by 42% in mild cases, 38% in moderate cases and 30% in severe cases after just eight weeks.
In general, it would be a good idea for men aged 40 years and on to take the Prostate 1 Sabalasan to prevent BPH problems.
Before taking Prostate 1 Sabalasan, you should consult a healthcare practitioner to exclude a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Also, consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you suffer from or have a history of cardiovascular disease or any psychological disorder and/or condition such as frequent anxiety or depression.
Like all Saw palmetto products, Prostate 1 Sabalasan may cause minor side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following minor side effects can occur when using this product. These are likely to affect less than 1 in every 1,000 people.
• Stomach discomfort
• Allergic reactions such as skin rashes
Discontinue use if you find these are troubling you.
