Beat the winter blues with omega3+ joy

Boost Your Mood This Winter
As the days get darker, many people report feeling a little more down in the dumps than usual. According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, 15 per cent of Canadians experience the “winter blues,” where between 2 and 3 per cent of Canadians experience more intense symptoms. We call this Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. Symptoms of SAD are similar to symptoms of depression, and can include hopelessness, lethargy, oversleeping, an increase in appetite, and overeating.

Conventional therapies for SAD include light therapy and may include anti-depressants. But the good news is that the right fish oil supplement can increase your joie de vivre, naturally.

Links between depression and inflammation have been established, with studies showing elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and low levels of omega-3 fatty acids being frequently reported in people suffering from depression. Considering this link between depression and inflammation, it makes sense to address symptoms of depression by addressing inflammation.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are the key to reducing inflammation. EFAs are “healthy” fats that are essential because our bodies can’t make them – we need to get them from our diet. Two such essential fatty acids are linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acids (omega-3). Ideally these are consumed in a ratio of 1:1 or 2:1. However, the typical North American eats more like 10:1 (or even as high as 20:1!) due to the high amounts of omega-6 containing oils such as safflower/sunflower and corn. This diet increases inflammation because omega-6 oils create arachidonic acid – a precursor to key inflammatory mediators and inflammatory signaling molecules called prostaglandins.

There are two types of omega-3 fatty acids that come into play when we are talking about inflammation and depression:
– Decosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is our structural fatty acid that supports cognition, memory, and development
– Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) is a second messenger in nerve cells that can help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression

Although both of these omega-3s aid the brain, a 1:1 ratio will not take a person from being down in the dumps to feeling great – the DHA/EPA ratio must be optimal!

EPA can be found in wild-caught fish, but can be more easily obtained in particular fish oil supplements that are formulated to have higher concentrations of EPA like omega3+ joy. omega3+ joy uses an EPA concentrate in a dosage of 2000mg that is scientifically proven to boost mood – you will feel the difference!

The full line of Genuine Health omega-3 formulas adhere to the Omega-3 Superior Quality 5 Point Program certifying our commitment to superior Omega-3 fish oils that meet and exceed quality, freshness, purity, and sustainability standards, while offering the highest potency on the market today.

The good news is that you don’t need to be clinically depressed to feel the benefits of EPA – a 2009 study found that EPA can benefit those who are in distress, yet may not meet clinical criteria for depression. Now is the perfect time to begin supplementing with omega3+ joy – to prevent those winter blues from creeping in.
