Heart Health Tip: Reduce triglyceride levels  – naturally!
High triglyceride levels can lead to heart disease and stroke.  Reduce your triglyceride levels through healthy eating and omega-3 supplementation to cut your risk of cardiovascular disease!
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, a life is taken by heart disease or stroke every seven minutes in Canada. While some heart disease risk factors are hereditary, there are ways to take control of your health and reduce your risk. Reducing triglyceride levels is one way to decrease your likelihood of developing heart disease.
What are triglycerides?
Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the blood. As you eat a meal, your body converts the excess calories you’re consuming into triglycerides, which are stored in your fat cells. Triglycerides are later released for energy between meals. Regularly eating more calories than you burn can result in high triglyceride levels. People with more abdominal fat tend to have higher triglyceride levels, since triglycerides are stored in fat cells. Excess refined carbohydrates and sugars in the diet and excessive alcohol consumption can also cause higher triglyceride levels.
High triglyceride levels,  sometimes referred to as hypertriglyceridemia, can contribute to the hardening of the arteries, which increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart attack. They also often accompany other health issues such as obesity or metabolic syndrome.
How to reduce triglycerides?
People typically associate a low-fat diet with a lower heart disease risk, but in fact, low-fat diets can increase triglyceride levels. Excessive amounts of wheat, grains, sugars, starchy foods, and alcohol are all fuel for high triglyceride levels. By reducing refined grains, added sugars, and starchy legumes, triglyceride levels are lowered and conditions like low HDL, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure can be corrected.
When it comes to fat in the diet, not all fats are created equal. Instead of saturated fats, found in many meats, hydrogenated oils, or trans fats, choose healthier monounsaturated fats found in plants, such as olive, peanut, or coconut oils. Supplementing with a fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids EPA + DHA is also crucial for reducing triglyceride levels.  Health Canada recommends 1,000-5,000mg EPA + DHA each day for reducing triglyceride levels. Ascenta’s Nutrasea 2x Concentrated Softgels are an excellent omega-3 supplement choice.
How omega-3s help
Like vitamins and minerals, omega-3 must be supplied by our diet as it is not produced by our bodies. Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for proper functioning of the cellular membrane and are therefore critical to the health of all cells. Omega-3 fatty acids regulate many bodily processes, such as inflammation, immune system response, and neurological functioning. EPA + DHA are the active forms of omega-3 required by the body to perform these vital functions.
A shift in our diet over decades has led to an over-consumption of omega-6 (found in foods such as vegetable cooking oils) and an under-consumption of omega-3, found in fish and wild game. This has resulted in most North Americans being omega-3 deficient. A decreased amount of omega-3 relative to omega-6 in the diet increases the risk of degenerative disease.
