Ah, yes – the proverbial pair of ‘fat pants.’ Admit it, we all have them in our closets. But, if you find you’re adorning them more than a few times a year you may be suffering from yo-yo dieting.  When your weight goes up and down like a yo-yo on a string, it puts you at risk for low immunity and other undesirable health issues.  Take control of your weight and ditch those ‘fat pants’ for good.

What is Yo-Yo Dieting?
Every year new diet books hit shelves promising their unique way of eating is the ultimate diet.  Most of these trendy diets suggest extreme food restrictions. The result is poor dietary habits, nutrient imbalance, and eventually weight gain as old dietary habits return. It may not be sexy enough to market on a bookshelf, but a balanced diet rich in healthy natural foods is still the ultimate diet.  Yes, your mother was right – eat your vegetables!  Keeping your weight managed properly comes down to good dietary habits – once you have them, it’s easy to eat right and keep those fat pants in the closet.

Scientist’s Secrets
With a New Year upon us, many are looking for weight loss support. Here’s what scientists know so far about some of the hottest weight loss supplements on Canadian shelves.

Green Coffee Bean Extract
Perhaps we shouldn’t be roasting those coffee beans after all. Green coffee bean extract has been investigated in a handful of studies for its potential to help weight loss. The results suggest an average weight loss of about 2.5kg when compared to placebo.  Most recently, a double-blind, placebo controlled study, out of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, reported that green coffee bean extract appears to reduce weight in overweight adults.  In fact, the study found overweight adults shifted into a healthy weight range while taking green coffee bean extract. The active ingredient in green coffee bean thought to be responsible for its weight loss abilities is chlorogenic acid.  Chlorogenic acid is thought to block fat absorption and slow the release of sugar into the blood stream. Scientists haven’t come to a final conclusion on green coffee bean extract yet, but initial results are promising.

L-Carnitine
In our body, carnitine is the wagon that carts the fat across the street to the machine that breaks it down into energy. In more technical terms, L-carnitine transports chains of fatty acids in the mitochondrial matrix across the mitochondrial membrane ensuing fat metabolism.  Sufficient amounts of carnitine are needed for fat to be properly broken down.  Carnitine also helps reduce oxidative stress.  Clinically, carnitine has the best supportive evidence for applications pertaining to cardiovascular and cognitive health, but it has been proposed for many conditions including weight loss.

Raspberry Ketones
That sweet aroma of red raspberries may help your waistline. Scientists have found that raspberry ketones prevent and improve fatty liver.  In a 2005 issue of Life Sciences, Japanese researchers reported that raspberry ketones prevented increases in body weight in mice.  The anti-obesity effects of raspberry ketones are thanks to its ability to increase proteins involved in fat metabolism.  As to the effectiveness of raspberry ketones in humans, future trials should be able to offer some concrete numbers.

Ditching those Fat Pants
It’s time to purge your closets of those oversized pants and keep your belt on the same notch.   Have confidence in a balanced diet rich in natural, whole foods as a sustainable and healthy way to lose weight. It might not be fast or trendy, but it works.  And, check out the scientific discoveries around supplements that support weight loss including raspberry ketones, green coffee bean and L-carnitine as one of these supplements may be right for you.

The Waist Away Line
Researched, professionally formulated weight loss supplements that offer effective results are available in Canada from Waist Away. Their Green Tea & Raspberry Ketone combines two effective weight loss supplements. Recently, green tea extract was reported to increase fat oxidation by 33 percent (Eur J Clin Nutr 2010), and Raspbery Ketones were called a “miracle fat burner in a bottle” on a popular daytime talk show.  Waist Away Green Coffee Bean has 800mg of Green Coffee Bean Extract per serving, with 45.9% chlorogenic acid. Their L-Carnitine contains a 100% pure pharmaceutical grade form of L-Carnitine, which is a widely popular support for weight loss in Canada.
